The Monument to the Discoveries was erected in tribute to the Portuguese maritime discoveries led by Henry the Navigator.
Better known by the moniker of “Pau de Sabão” (Soap Log), this is an impressive and four-square monument, with each of its sides presenting embossed works alluding to the discoveries made during the life of Prince Henry. Formally opened on 28 August 1960, the Discovery Monument, executed by António Aragão, now stands on Alameda do Infante (Infante Lane).
