The Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) was a pioneer in the whole Portugal, in developing a good practices document to deal with Covid-19 - COVID SAFE TOURISM (english version), resulting from the involvement of the entire tourism sector along with the launch of a certification process that will reassure consumer confidence and hence promote Madeira as a safe tourism location for all visitors.

Consolidating the work carried out, the Regional Government of Madeira (GRM) opted for testing all travellers, upon arrival in the Region.  This measure allows all visitors to be sure that, in addition to finding a population monitored by the health authorities, those who entered were duly analysed, thereby promoting a high security environment and generating significant levels of confidence.

The government will pay for all costs of the tests upon arrival to Madeira Islands, to prevent any extra costs for travellers. However, these tests can be avoided if passengers present a PCR test with a negative result, carried out in the last 72 hours prior to departure.

The testing process is carried out by the Regional Health Authority, with the collaboration of ANA – Airports of Portugal, and strives for the highest speed with least inconvenience for travellers.

All passengers who, upon disembarking at the airports and ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira from any territory out of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, carry a negative PCR test for COVID-19, carried out within 72 hours prior to boarding, in laboratories certified by national or international authorities, can proceed to their destination.

On the otherhand, passengers who have not undergone PCR testing at their location of origin will do so upon arrival at the airport, then proceed to their destination, thus having to fully comply with the surveillance and self-reporting of symptoms, as well as the COVID-19 preventive measures, until a negative test result is obtained.

Travellers should schedule the PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 infection, by registering on the website www.madeirasafe.com or at the Emergency and Public Health Unit, with a minimum of 4 days in advance (96 hours), via the following e-mail: saudepublica.drs@madeira.gov.pt.

Taking the PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 infection does not incur any charges for the traveller.

It should be noted that, due to the epidemiological evolution, trips between Madeira and Porto Santo Islands are currently subject to control, wherefore passengers who disembark at Porto Santo Airport, on a flight from Madeira Airport, or vice versamust carry a TRAg test for SARS-CoV-2, with a negative result, carried out within a maximum period of 48 hours prior to boarding, or a PCR screening test for SARS-CoV-2 infection, with a negative result, carried out within a maximum period of 72 hours prior to boarding.

On the other hand, passengers boarding at the Port of Funchal with Porto Santo Island as the destination, or vice versa, must present the TRAg test for SARS-CoV -2with a negative result, performed within a maximum period of 48 hours prior to disembarkment, or a PCR screening test for SARS-CoV-2 infection, with a negative result, carried out within a maximum period of 72 hours prior to disembarkment.

The TRAg test for SARS-CoV-2 can be undertaken in pharmacies, laboratories, clinics and collection stations that adhere to the massive testing campaign by the Regional Government, without any charges for travellers, according to information laid down in Resolution No. 778/2021 (portuguese version).
Taking the TRAg test for SARS-CoV-2 infection does not incur any charges for the traveller.

Recommend all travelers disembarking in the Archipelago of Madeira and those traveling between islands (Madeira and Porto Santo), whether by air or sea, to register on the website www.madeirasafe.com.

The provisions of the previous paragraph include the following exceptions:

a) Children up to eleven years of age;
b) Travellers who present a medical document, issued in the last 90 days, certifying that they have recovered from COVID-19 disease, or a document certifying that they have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
